« on: April 07, 2013, 03:16:45 PM »
We will try and do a beta update relatively often, so that people who are testing can see that things are moving and that their bugs get fixed.

This will most likely be the last beta, we are planning to create a release candidate later this month.

4.0.217:

- changed to a new reporting engine, which meant that we had to redo all the reports - still work in progress
- a few bug corrections

Having to change the reporting engine caused a delay in getting to a release candidate, the current plan if things look good with this beta release is to have an 'rc' in August, yes 2013:).

- correction of bugs reported by testers (big thanks for the work done) which we could recreate

4.0.177 - first beta:
We decided it is time to start the beta cycle for version 4.0, this means we are now only correcting bugs.  We will resist as much as possible to add new features, they will be added to the todo list for version 4.1.

http://thewinecellarbook.com/dls/setup-twcb_4.0.177.2.exe

Since the last alpha release we have done the following:
- fixed bugs
- more corrections with regards to the wine rack feature
- a few more features with regards to wine rack handling, e.g. create consumption from single bottle units
- some more reporting features
- F1 now opens up the English help which is mostly updated to version 4
- a few short-cuts have been added, which can be seen on the corresponding menu item
- a short-cut editor has been added to the tools menu - currently changes are only saved within the running session, we are
working with the author of this neat tool to be able to permanently save changes.

We will do more testing over the coming weeks, update the translations and very soon convert our own cellar to version 4.

As always we do appreciate feed back on this version in the form of bug reports or any other comment you would like to make.

Test Versions / Re: V4.0.154 - 3rd alpha
« on: March 05, 2013, 01:30:43 PM »
On some systems you get an error during the install that OdbcFb32.dll could not be registered.  This is only a problem for people wanting to access the database from e.g. LibreOffice.

The ODBC driver can be registered manually with this command:
regsvr32 c:\windows\system32\OdbcFb32.dll

The problem is fixed here and will be included in the next release, in that version I will also include a newer version of the driver which is named OdbcFb.dll.

Note, that we have not tested the ODBC access to v4 database at all yet.

Test Versions / V4.0.154 - 3rd alpha
« on: March 02, 2013, 12:08:29 PM »
This is a test version, only use it if you like to see what is coming in v4 and like to provide feed back.

A few problems where found with the conversion routine in 4.0.145, so I decided to issue an update to it.

http://thewinecellarbook.com/dls/setup-twcb_4.0.154.1.exe

I decided to do one more alpha release as the wine rack management had lots of problems which required database changes.

Took this opportunity to make another enhancement in the wine rack.  There is now a "combined rack unit" which allows to group up to 15 "base" units into one.  The intend of this is for shelf units and for wine fridges, which are nothing else then a shelf unit with a fridge around it :)

Note that editing of combined units and single bottle storage units is very limited at the moment, I will improve on that but that might not make it into v4.0 but only v4.1.

This version has also the upgrade code included, if you copy a version 3.2 database to the v3 data folder and start the program the database will be automatically converted.  Please note that the v3 licence key will not work, therefore you can not add more then 15 wines after you converted to v4.  New v4 keys will be issued when the version goes official.

Should you test the conversion from 3.2 to 4.0 and you see problems with your data please send me your version 3.2 database and provide details on what did not convert correctly.

Announcements / Version 4.0.124.1 - Alpha test version
« on: January 06, 2013, 12:53:28 PM »
We are pleased to announce an ALPHA test release for The Wine Cellar Book version 4, as it is alpha it is not usable in production, and you can not convert your version 3 data to version 4 (this functionality will be made available in the beta releases).

What is new in version 4
The application has been rewritten from scratch, making better use of the programming tools.

User Interface has been totally overhauled
- all lists (drink list, recipe list, master data list etc) are user configurable by just dragging the header of the column and you can save the new configuration by using the right mouse click in the list. Some columns are hidden, to show them use the menu option “Master data – application/ list control” (check on “Show” and set the width for the column you want to show, if a column is not present please let me know and we will add it if possible).

- When you see the “Edit” button on the bottom left, this indicates that there is a dialog to change the items, this dialog can be opened by double clicking on the item to edit.

- There are three colour schemes, currently you can only set this during the installation, there will be an option in the preferences for it.

Functionality
- A tasting event has been added

- Besides images one can now link PDF documents and Web links to a wine or recipe

- The layout of screens can to some extent be customized by moving panes to where you would like them, very handy if you have a high resolution screen to be able to see multiple panes of the wine details at the same time.

- The layout will be saved when you close dialogs and the application.  When you start the application it will use the last saved layout configuration.

- The application is now multi user and over time I will provide information on how to install it on a LAN with a PC used as a server.  The server has to be able to run the Firebird SQL Engine version 2.5+.

What is not yet done
- The bottle tag handling is not done yet at all.  This is the next thing we are going to work on, it will include a new wine rack designer/viewer.  Should you currently use this functionality or if you are interested to use it, I would like to see an image or two of your wine rack to see how they look and to try to make sure that they can be handled by the new designer.

- We are replacing the Report Designer, the new tool allows better customization of reports and we are creating a user interface where one can select different report filter criteria etc. before running the report.

- The statistics pages and the Global Wine Stock functionality is not yet done either.

How to use this alpha version
Version 4 can be installed next to prior versions of the The Wine Cellar Book as it installs by default to different folders then are used by version 3 and earlier.  DO NOT install it into the v3 folder it will not be usable.

Should you have used a prior alpha test version you need to delete the database (twcb.fdb) before installing the latest alpha release – note that any test data you might have is lost on each alpha version installation.

  • Correct issues with deleting bottle or vintage record of a drink
  • Wine fact sheet report would not preview/print if image was too large
  • Panel rating page used the wrong widget for the rating date
